Prescribed Quit Smoking Medication

What is quit smoking medication?

Quitting smoking using prescribed medication involves the use of non-nicotine medication that is only available on prescription from a doctor.

In Australia, there are currently two types of prescribed medication designed to help people quit smoking:

How do I get prescribed quit smoking medication?

You can only get Bupropion and Varenicline (Champix®) from your doctor.

You’ll need to talk to your doctor about which medication is right for you, as they work in different ways and may not be suitable for some people.

You can get these prescribed quit smoking medications at a reduced cost through the Government’s Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) – click here to visit the PBS website.

For more information about quitting smoking using prescribed quit smoking medications to stop smoking, consult your doctor, pharmacist or the NSW Quitline.

Is prescribed quit smoking medication effective?

Using quit smoking medication can increase your chances of quitting smoking successfully.

However, using non-nicotine medications like Bupropion and Varenicline to quit smoking is far more effective when combined with professional counselling support.
