New journey

Hi, I am 23 years old. I have decided I want to quit smoking as I get severe tension headaches from smoking. I have been nicotine free for 2 days and 3 hours now so I am still at the start of my journey. I have tried to stop smoking once in the past, which only lasted a month.

This sounds silly but one of my biggest fears of quitting is that I gain weight. I know it would be nothing compared to the benefits of quitting smoking but I have worked really hard to lose weight for as long as I can remember. I have lost 20kg to date.

Any tips and encouragement are welcome.

Good for you for taking the initiative to quit at such an early age. While you are here, read the stories and find the mindset that will keep you smoke free permanently. Quitting can even be easy. Smoking just costs alot and does absolutely nothing for us anyways. We got sucked in, but we now know that we are stronger than the nicotine addiction and that it is quite likely that we can quit smoking when we find the desire to. Finding the belief in yourself is crucial too, and that's why forums like this are invaluable. Seeing others quit enforces our belief and the support is helpful.
In a few hours you will be nicotine free if going cold turkey., and the worst will have passed. Be thankful you are no longer a slave to smoking. That endless cycle of feeding it and to keep feeding it because it keeps the cycle going. We can break the cycle, starve out the nicoman and enjoy the freedom. Embrace the quit and it can be over much more quickly and easily. I did it, and so can you.

As far as weight gain, find something other than food to take your mind off of smoking. You cell phone, calls, games, surfing etc.;.... Eating whole natural foods are more sating than empty calorie junk food. Your body is going to love you back! Walk a little more or try 10 minute HIIT's should you start to gain.

Hi Quitki, if you quit smoking by cold turkey, your confidence will be so high that you won't feel anything special about loosing weight. I gained aprox 15 kg after quitting. But, when I decided to loose weight, the journey was so easy. I lost 13 kgs in just 2 months, without special diet, without exercise, without special attention to it. After quitting nicotine my confidence was so high that getting back to normal eating habits was very easy.

I hope you also will find very easy as me. Just focus one thing at a time. Don't measure your weight while quitting. Atleast for 4-5 months after quitting. Once you are free from nicotine, you can easily control your weight.

Good morning, thank you for your comments. Thanks to people like you, I feel more confident than ever this time.

Happiness- I had been smoking for 6 years now so I know for a fact that it will be easier to quit now then further along the line. I have also started running. which is really helping since it reminds me of the benefits of not smoking.

Swapnil- I will keep your advice in mind. Yes, I have quit cold turkey. I'm sure it will be worth it.

You know somebody once told me this .....we should never say I'm giving up smoking....you never gained anything in the first place that ud have to give it up...and the feelings of giving up* or sacrifice of cigarettes can lead the mind to think we need to fill up its absence with some other thing ....say food....if thoughts of giving up is not there thoughts of forgoing something not there you wont need a substitute for it....that said , I think it's one of the main reasons why people binge eat when off smoking....and thus gain weight ....the belief that ur losing something precious has to be replaced with a positive belief....its hard I know....weight gain is a reality for many post quitting but think of ot this way u aren't giving up anything ....you are gaining ur freedom back....all the best

I found that whenever I got the urge to have a cig, I would pull myself aside .. give myself a little time to settle back down emotionally .. clear my thoughts

And the craving and anxiety went away

    Baby steps
