Should I Tell People I’m Quitting Smoking?
If you’re trying to give up smoking, you have asked yourself this question:
“Should I tell my family and friends that I’m trying to quit?”
Unfortunately, there’s no universal or easy answer to this question – because when it comes to quitting smoking, everyone’s quit journey is different.
Why Some People Tell
Some smokers feel it would be a huge help to have the support of family and friends during their quit attempt.
If you feel comfortable about the type of support you’ll receive from those around you, then go ahead and tell, and rally that positive support!
Why Some People Don’t Tell
Other smokers feel uncomfortable about telling family or friends they are quitting smoking. This might be because they feel a lot of pressure to quit. Some smokers also report feeling guilty about smoking slip-ups, as they feel they have let their family or friends down.
For some, it seems like there is less pressure to meet the expectations of those around them if they simply don’t tell others about their quit attempt.
The fact is, there is no right or wrong answer in your decision to tell family or friends about quitting smoking. Both options have benefits and drawbacks – you just have to decide what feels right for you.
