A recent adaption to the normal strategy of wearing the patch
from the quit day onwards is to start applying a 21mg patch two
weeks prior to a quit date. This strategy is designed for
people who smoke more than 15 cigarettes a day. Research has shown
that this enhances the chances of quitting. It allows someone to
reduce smoking prior to the quit date without experiencing
withdrawal symptoms. It provides a chance to practice managing
typical smoking situations and triggers.
Some people may have concerns that they may get too much
nicotine from a pre quit with patch strategy. However for someone
who is suited to this kind of therapy, research shows that there is
no increased risk of side effects. To find out more, please
consult your GP, pharmacist or Quitline.
