When they say they need to vape to cope

When you vape, your body gets used to having nicotine in your system, which unlocks a ‘feel-good’ chemical in the brain. The more someone vapes, the more nicotine they need to continue feeling good.

For people with nicotine dependence, if they stop or reduce the amount they vape, they may experience cravings and withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, tension, headaches, and trouble sleeping.

Some people say that vaping relieves feelings of stress or anxiety. What is more likely happening is that the person is feeding their nicotine withdrawal.

When someone says they need to vape to cope with stress or anxiety, talk with them about other strategies for coping.

Keep an eye on the person you’re supporting to quit. Some level of anxiety or irritability is normal during the quitting period, but if you’re seeing extreme anxiety or mood changes, you should suggest they talk to a doctor for further support.
